Small and medium businesses make up 97% of the total number of business in most modern economies around the world and slightly less than 50% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

It is estimated that fewer than 300,000 organisations have an ISO 14001 certified Environment Management System (EMS) in the UK.

This means that there are more than 4,400,000 businesses that do not have an EMS!

Small and medium businesses are missing an opportunity to raise their stature and win new business because they think an EMS is too difficult or too costly. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Although 97% of companies are Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) the majority of business won in competition is taken by large companies (over 250 people). This means that SMEs fail to get considered for direct business with customers and need to rely upon their ability to become involved in sub-contracting arrangements with larger companies – a process which usually means that they will be paid less and do not have the benefit of being visible to the customer.
