Small and medium businesses make up 97% of the total number of business in most modern economies around the world and slightly less than 50% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

When it comes to winning business from the public sector or big business, the numbers are much less attractive.

Although 97% of companies are Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) the majority of business won in competition is taken by large companies (over 250 people). This means that SMEs fail to get considered for direct business with customers and need to rely upon their ability to become involved in sub-contracting arrangements with larger companies – a process which usually means that they will be paid less and do not have the benefit of being visible to the customer.
